Please accept my apologies for any offence caused by my previous blog . Seemingly some readers have taken exception to my remarks made in an effort to achieve free speech. Some commens from concerned readers related to the fact that the travellers were displaced unfairly. I am sure that permenant sites should be found and that most travellers would appreciate such provision.
I wish to make clear that Holbeck Moor has never really been common land having been given by landowners to the Monks of Kirkstall for settlement and grazing and subsequently passed on for the leasure and pleasure of the workers of Holbeck.
In relation to the readers comments that the travellers are poor and financially disadvantaged, I personaly witnessed their caravans moving off the Moor last week and noted that the procession was led by a brand new pickup truck pulling a new 2012 model sterling caravan worth at least £20,000. Most of us pay taxes through PAYE and local taxes through council tax, not so the travellers .
A reader commented quite rightly that the closure of the day centre and the sports centre was not the doing of the travellers. However it is true that the subsequent looting of theses buildings was down to some members of the travelling community. Last week two such members were inside the hitherto locked day centre building. Real damage and vadalism caused directly by these travellers has brought the future use of the buildings into serious doubt.
Again I reiterate, that I have no problem with individual travellers they do have a right to their way of life . However they do not have the right to disturb and destroy exsisting communities .
