the leeds citizen

Developers looking to expand a retail centre in south Leeds have been asked to talk to local authorities in neighbouring Bradford, Wakefield and Kirklees about the possible impact of their plans.

Land Securities and The Evans Property Group announced last month that they want to add a multi-screen cinema, restaurants and cafes, and some new shops to the White Rose Centre in Morley, south Leeds, as well as expand the existing Debenhams and Primark stores there.

Councillors on Leeds City Council’s new strategic plans panel get their first chance to comment on the plans for the out-of-town centre at a meeting next week.

As the plans are at the pre-application stage (an outline application is expected before the New Year), no decisions will be taken, but judging by a report prepared for the meeting by council officers, the proposals face several major planning hurdles.

Conflict with “centres-first” policy

Stop Press

Hi Just had a telephone message from Angela Gabriel to remind us that 3rd May is Local Gov election day. Angela is up for re-election so Holbeck in Bloom meeting will take place week after on Thursday 10th May. When hopefully Angela will have been elected to serve us for another four years. Without her involvemebt as our Local Councillor the group would be struggling to achieve any real improvements for Holbeck. Please make sure you go out and vote and then come to the meeting on the following Thursday.

reply to blot on the landscape

Please accept my apologies for any offence caused by my previous blog . Seemingly some readers have taken exception to my remarks made in an effort to achieve free speech.  Some commens from concerned readers related to the fact that the travellers were displaced unfairly. I am sure that permenant sites should be found and that most travellers would appreciate such provision.

I wish to make clear that Holbeck Moor has never really been common land having been given by landowners to the Monks of Kirkstall for settlement and grazing and subsequently passed on for the leasure and pleasure of the workers of Holbeck.

In relation to the readers comments that the travellers are poor and financially disadvantaged, I personaly witnessed their caravans moving off the Moor last week and noted that the procession was led by a brand new pickup truck pulling a new 2012 model sterling caravan worth at least £20,000. Most of us pay taxes through PAYE  and local taxes through council tax, not so the travellers .

A reader commented quite rightly that the closure of the day centre and the sports centre was not the doing of the travellers. However it is true that the subsequent looting of theses buildings was down to some members of the travelling community. Last week two such members were inside the hitherto locked day centre building. Real damage and vadalism caused directly by these travellers has brought the future use of the buildings into serious doubt.

Again I reiterate, that I have no problem with individual travellers they do have a right to their way of life . However they do not have the right to disturb and destroy exsisting communities .

Special report: Blot on the Landscape

Blot on the Landscape

Travellers have taken over in Holbeck. Guess as individuals they are ok but as a collective they are a nuisance. For the past month local residents have had to put up with noise, vandalism and inconvenience from them.

Horses have been left to roam over grass verges have trampling down recently planted flower beds, dogs allowed to rum amok. One person ended up in hospital as a result of being attacked by one of the dogs.

According to reports, piles of rubble have been dumped, the remnants of private drives and pathways recently tarmacked.

When will so called ‘do gooders’ wake up to the plight of ordinary citizens struggling to pay bills and live in harmony with their neighbours. Human rights should work both ways and balance out the rights of all.

Sadly for us Holbeckians these travellers have changed the face of Holbeck forever. The Day Centre closed two years ago and offered by the council to local community groups is now unusable.

Walls damaged. electricity and gas cables ripped out and copper pipes stolen. Holbeck Elderly Aid were almost at the point of taking over this centre and bringing a much needed facility back into community use.

Alas this project will doubtfully ever take place due to the astronomical costs now needed to repair the centre. The South Leeds Sports Centre recently underwent a similar fate thanks to the travellers and will according to reliable sources most likely need to be demolished.

We must call time on these unsociable, unaccountable families and they should be made to face up to their actions and held accountable by the authorities.

Holbeck has always welcomed travelling people and has a history of being hospitable, many such families have settled within our community and are valued.
